Temporary Visas.

Want to live in New Zealand temporarily? There are a range of visas that could be available to you.

  • Work Visas – if you want to work in New Zealand temporarily, you will need a work visa.

  • Family-based Work Visas – if you have a partner who is a New Zealand citizen, permanent resident or work visa holder, you could be eligible for a work visa.

  • Entrepreneur Work Visa – if you are self-employed and want to work in New Zealand, you may be able to get this work visa.

  • Student Visas – if you want to come to New Zealand to study for more than three months, you will need a student visa.

  • Post-study Work Visas – if you have completed a qualification in New Zealand, you may be eligible for a work visa for 1-3 years, depending on your qualification.

  • Visitor Visas – if you want to come visit New Zealand, you may need a visitor visa if you are from a country that does not waive this requirement.

Resident Visas.

  • Skilled Migrant Category – this is a points-based residency application based on your professional background.

  • Business and Investor Visas – if you are an entrepreneur and want to buy or establish your own business, or want to invest in New Zealand, you may be eligible for one of these visas.

  • Family Visas – if your partner or child is a New Zealand citizen or resident, you might be eligible for a family resident visa.

  • Retirement Visas – if you would like to spend your retirement years in New Zealand, explore the option of a retirement visa.

  • Residence from Work – if your skills are needed by New Zealand employers, or if you have an exceptional talent or are working in an area of identified absolute occupational shortage in New Zealand, you could be eligible for this visa.

Employer Accreditation.

New Zealand employers wanting to employ migrants will need to become accredited with Immigration New Zealand.

  • The current voluntary accreditation system has closed to new and renewing applications.

  • A new Accredited Employer Work Visa will be introduced in mid 2022 and replace 6 existing temporary work visa categories.

  • These 6 work visas that will be replaced are: Essential Skills Work Visa (remains open until AEWV introduced), Essential Skills Work Visa – approved in principle (remains open until AEWV introduced), Talent (Accredited Employer) Work Visa (closing 31 October 2021), Long Term Skill Shortage List Work Visa (closing 31 October 2021), Silver Fern Job Search Visa (closed 7 October 2019) and Silver Fern Practical Experience Visa (closing 31 October 2021).

  • All employers will need to be accredited before they can hire a migrant on an Accredited Employer Work Visa.

New Zealand Citizenship.

There are four ways to become a citizen in New Zealand: by birth, by descent, by adoption or by grant.  To become a New Zealand citizen by grant, you must meet all of the following criteria.

  • You already have the right to be in New Zealand indefinitely (you’re a permanent resident of New Zealand or Australia, or you’re an Australian citizen).

  • You’ve lived in New Zealand for at least the last 5 years.

  • You intend to keep living in New Zealand.

  • You’re of good character.
